Woodwork (Shelving Project)
15 days DVD shelving project
The shelving project took place after a few months of research and planning. I needed some shelves to place my game and movie collection. Initially the problem I had was the space available to place the shelves (106cm) and the shelves had to be taller enough to fit a large number of DVDs/Blu-rays and books that I have. I started looking at local furniture shops and IKEA, but I did not find the shelves with the length, width and height to fit in the space.
After a while, I thought: Maybe I can try to build the shelves by myself. Since I grew up watching my father (a professional carpenter) build furniture for living. I thought I could design and build the furniture myself or with some help. I started the projects after a few weeks when I saw some bed frames and boxes in my parents house, which were there to be recycled. I asked them if I could use the bed boxes and the garden space to build the shelves and they agreed. Then I started with the drawings and sketches, bought some tools necessary for the work and long pieces of oat wood to use as the frame for the shelves. I decided to work on the project two or three times a week and during the summer to take advantage of the longer periods of daylight and avoid periods of rain that could damage the wood.
After fifteen days of work I concluded the project and decided to do a three-month short course of woodwork to improve my skills in wood-craft. I never dreamed of becoming a carpenter myself but I kind enjoy working with wood and fixing things around the house.
I intend to hone this skill and work on personal projects in the future, but I do not intend to take up carpentry as a profession.
Another reason why I decided to build the shelves was that I could film the process and practice camera work alongside it. I filmed the building process and all the days that I worked on the project.
